How do I connect to TOM once the vpn is connected. I can see the server as I would if I were local, but see no databases. Do I need to edit the server name? Help! |

It depends on how you want to connect.
First off, if you are expecting to connect directly using the Workstation software be aware that performance will be completely limited by your internet connection. With touchy connections this can cause problems and other unexpected errors to occur. That said, to connect directly you will need to ensure all required ports are being forwarded properly. There are many ways to do this, and you'll need to determine what ports are required for the purpose you are connecting for. You can find additional information on the internet or from a local networking consultant. If you plan to remote into a Terminal Server or via Remote Desktop you'll need to allow the default RDP port 3389 on all routers and firewalls between your remote computer and computer/server in the office. The default ports for SQL Server (the database engine) are TCP 1433 and UDP 1434. It is possible to customize these, but that is a more advanced topic that should be researched or implemented by a professional networking consultant. It is recommended that you use a Terminal Server or Remote Desktop connection method via the VPN rather than connecting directly. That is, of course, unless you have an exceptionally fast connection at both ends (upwards of 5 Mbps). |
